Home Stay English with Mark Fletcher and his wife Debbie.

Welcome to Home Stay?

For about ten weeks of each year Debbie and I run very personal one week Home Stay courses. These are usually for two people but 1-1 courses (or courses for three people) are also possible, and a course can be longer than one week.

What is Home Stay?

Participants stay with us in our large Edwardian house in Folkestone and are part of the family. The general pattern is that I teach the participants during the morning and then we go for a study-visit to a nearby place of interest in the afternoon, and have a relaxed meal together with lots of chat in the evening. We use ‘brain-friendly’ teaching methods so participants can expect to make excellent progress as well as having a good time.

What do we do?

The course content, timetable, visits etc depend on what the participants most want to do.
Sometimes people have very specific language or professional requirements in which case I create a course around those wishes. Other people are quite happy to work with us to improve their general English and have a real ‘English Experience’.
Almost everyone who comes has come through a contact between their teacher and myself which means that useful liason takes place before people arrive.
Several teachers have participated for a language ‘brush-up’ or to work on something connected with their professional interests.
Several couples have come together as a working holiday, and it is not necessary that they should be at the same level of English.

When does it run?

Dates can be negotiated but usually people come from Sunday to Saturday.

How much does it cost?

Fees A one week course for two people inclusive of tuition, accommodation, dinner and breakfast, study visits, materials, and local travel is £1400
For a 1-1 course the inclusive price is £1080pw

What is there to do?

According to people’s interests the study visits might include The White Cliffs of Dover, Canterbury Cathedral, a day in London, Sissinghurst Gardens. Tea shops and pubs will certainly be on the menu and, (according to the weather) perhaps outdoor theatre with a picnic or a walk by the sea and a cuppa where ‘Dinner for one’ was filmed!
Our house is ten minutes walk across the park to the sea or to the town centre.
We are one hour forty minutes by train from Charing Cross station. I always collect arrivals from Folkestone station for the short ride to our house.
Also at home is my son John, plus two friendly dogs.
Please tell anyone you think might be interested. I am very happy to answer questions or put prospective guests in touch with Swiss people who have already been on a course.
